Safety island light box

In 1973, the Public Works Department of Hong Kong (which was split into several departments in 1982, including the Highways Department) began to pilot various measures to improve traffic safety. One of these measures was the introduction of the second-generation "safety island light box" from the United Kingdom. It was named "Morrison Light" most likely in honor of its introducer, Morrison, a senior police officer in the Transport Department at the time.

The new traffic light is characterized by its use of lower-cost plastic materials and a bulb housed within the plastic casing, illuminating the entire light at night and making it visible to drivers from any direction. Its affordability and high quality have garnered widespread praise during the trial period. Another significant breakthrough is the adoption of internationally standardized traffic symbols, replacing cumbersome text descriptions with arrows to allow drivers to make faster driving decisions.

Reports at the time stated that the first batch of trial devices appeared on Garden Road, Nathan Road, and To Kwa Wan Road, and there were two styles. It is worth mentioning that the now common large-head design had never appeared in the UK before. This may be the "improvement" mentioned in the newspapers, which can be considered a local design in Hong Kong.

Unbeknownst to many, the Morrison traffic lights have been silently protecting Hong Kong's traffic safety for over forty years. They have withstood wind and rain and are getting closer to their retirement. People may want to pay more attention to these precious "local traffic devices" on the streets.

To preserve this precious local memory, Dingdang specially shrunk the safety island lights using miniaturized flashlights and refurbished them with Time Cloth. We hope everyone will support them.
