Safety island light box
In 1973, the Public Works Department of Hong Kong (which was split into multiple departments in 1982, including the Highways Department, etc.) began to trial a variety of measures to improve traffic safety. One of them was the introduction of the second-generation "safety island light box" from the United Kingdom. The reason why it is called "Morrison Light" is probably to commemorate its introduction - Morrison, the senior police officer of the Department of Transportation.
The characteristic of this new light is that it uses lower-cost plastic materials, and has a light bulb placed in a plastic shell, which emits light at night so that drivers can see it from any direction. It is cheap and high-quality during the trial period. It was widely praised. Another major breakthrough is the replacement of traffic symbols with international standards, which use arrows instead of cumbersome text descriptions to allow drivers to make driving decisions more quickly.
It was reported that the first batch of trial installations appeared on Garden Road, Nathan Road and To Kwa Wan Road, and there were two styles. It is worth mentioning that the now common big-head design has never appeared in the UK. This may be what the newspaper calls an "improvement" and can be regarded as a local design in Hong Kong.
Unconsciously, the "Morrison Signal" has been silently guarding Hong Kong's traffic safety for more than 40 years. They have been exposed to all kinds of wind and rain, and the day of retirement is getting closer and closer. Everyone may wish to pay more attention to these lights on the streets on weekdays. A precious "local transportation device".
In order to preserve this precious local memory, Dingdang specially used a shrinking flashlight to shrink the safety island lamp and used time cloth to renovate it. I hope everyone will support it.
