The black box, whose full name is "Electronic Pedestrian Crossing Button", has been used by the Transport Department since the 1970s. In addition to the buttons on it, the light box also has "Button and Wait Signal" and "Wait" printed on it. By pressing the button on the box, the device is activated and the word "Waiting" lights up. The pedestrian crossing period at the crossing will then start. Since 2003, Hong Kong has begun to use electronic pedestrian crossing sound buttons with vibrating components (electronic sound buttons) called "yellow boxes". Its usage is the same as the old black box, except that there is a vibrating component at the bottom. , convenient for the visually impaired.

The electronic pedestrian crossing sound device is used to alert the visually impaired to the status of pedestrian lights. Electronic pedestrian crossing sound emitting devices currently installed on the streets can automatically adjust the output volume according to the ambient noise level; output a higher volume in a high-noise environment and automatically lower the volume in a quiet environment. Electronic pedestrian crossing sound devices can provide clear messages to visually impaired people while reducing nuisance to nearby residents. This device is also equipped with a vibrating component that uses different vibrating modes to remind pedestrians of the status of crossing lights.

The last box of electronic pedestrian crossing buttons was replaced in Taikoo Shing in 2020 due to aging parts.
