Electronic pedestrian crossing lights

The black box, officially named the "Electronic Pedestrian Crossing Button," has been used by the Transport Department since the 1970s. In addition to buttons, it features a lightbox printed with "Press and Waiting Signal" and "Waiting." When a pedestrian presses the button, the device is activated and the "Waiting" sign illuminates, initiating the pedestrian crossing period. Since 2003, Hong Kong has switched to the "Yellow Box," a sound-activated electronic pedestrian crossing button with a vibration mechanism (electronic sound button). Its operation is the same as the older black box, but it includes a vibration mechanism at the bottom for easier use by visually impaired individuals.

Electronic pedestrian crossing alerts are used to inform visually impaired individuals of pedestrian crossing signal status. Currently installed on streets, these alerts automatically adjust their output volume according to ambient noise levels; they operate at higher volumes in noisy environments and automatically lower volumes in quiet environments. These alerts provide clear information to visually impaired individuals while minimizing disturbance to nearby residents. The devices also include vibration components that use different vibration patterns to indicate the status of pedestrian crossing signals.

The last set of electronic pedestrian crossing buttons was replaced in Taikoo Shing in 2020 due to aging parts.

To preserve this precious local memory, Dingdang specially shrunk the electronic pedestrian crossing button using a miniaturized flashlight and refurbished and modified it into a keychain using time fabric. We hope everyone will support them.
